of Juveniles

NOTIFICATION OF ILLNESS, INJURY AND DEATH

Juveniles should be informed as soon as possible of the death, serious

illness or injury of any immediate family member and be entitled to visit the

family member or attend the funeral.

The juvenile’s family should be informed of the state of health of the

juvenile and of any changes which have occurred. The director of the facility

should immediately notify the juvenile’s family in case of illness requiring the

transfer of the juvenile. Should a juvenile die in detention, or within six

months of release, there should be an independent inquiry, the report of which

should be made available to the nearest relative. The nearest relative should

also be entitled to be informed of the death and to inspect the death

certificate.
