Materials
This course is designed for professionals who provide after-hours and
weekend coverage for Child Protective Services, but are
not child protective workers. This highly focused program presents
participants with the conceptual framework necessary for
the ñon-callî delivery of protective services. It also provides an
opportunity to practice identifying factors that influence child
safety and to discuss concerns about CPS work.
Objectives

Identify immediate considerations for child safety
- Increase knowledge and skills in the delivery of CPS, including crisis
intervention, removal and protective custody, and
assessment and decision-making
- Encourage the practice of supervisory consultation for decisions made in
emergent situations
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program participants will be able to:
- identify the statutes and regulations determining the delivery of Child
Protective Services
- know the role and responsibilities of an on-call worker
- recognize characteristics of the crisis state and what strategies to use
for crisis intervention
- recognize physical injuries associated with child abuse and neglect
- specify the requisite steps for taking a child into protective custody
Intended Audience
Child Welfare or other Human Services personnel who are not CPS workers
and who are involved in the delivery of ñon-callî
child protective services.
Outline
-
- Day 1 reviews the applicable laws and the definitions of abuse and
maltreatment; introduces the steps in the on-call
investigation; the basis of authority, and crisis intervention.

- Day 2 considers the types of injuries typically sustained by abused
children, immediate safety concerns, the removal process
and the effects of traumatic separation.
Training Methodology
Various training methods will be used including lecture, small group
discussion and forced choice activities. Audio-visual
materials such as flip charts and slides will also be used.
Materials
Participants receive a guidebook.
