This new course, CPS Interviewing, was developed in 1992 to meet the needs
of new staff who may have little interviewing
experience prior to assignment in CPS. This is a skill-building course,
designed to identify the interviewing skills
caseworkers need on the job, and to provide a framework for guiding and
developing the skills necessary for an effective CPS
interview. Practice issues relevant to communication techniques,
constructive use of authority, cultural diversity,
developmental distinctions, and the use of self will be explored.
Caseworkers with less than 1 year of experience
in CPS are appropriate for this course. The course is limited to 24
participants.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program participants will be able to:
- conduct an effective CPS interview
- identify the factors which may influence CPS interview outcomes
- identify their own interviewing strengths and weaknesses
Outline

- Day 1 - deals with planning, introducing self, rapport building, introducing
the topic of concern.

- Day 2 - addresses encouraging family response, focusing on problematic
areas, developing a plan of action, and closing.
Intended Audience
Child Protective Services caseworkers with less than 1 year experience.
Training Methodology
Various training methods include lectures, demonstration, exercise, and
use of self-evaluation instruments.
Materials
Participants receive a workbook.
